Brief History of Al-Halal

Al-Halal Cooperative Multipurpose Society (ACMS) is formed by concern individuals, voluntarily, firmly and solemnly resolved to form a cooperative society in furtherance of mutual interests and harmonious relationship based on Islamic principles for staff of Federal University of Technology, Minna; Niger state, Nigeria. The society's motto: “Allah has permitted trading and forbidden usury ('riba').” Its formal activities began in 2003 with about 27 members. The society is managed by team of EXCO and constituted committees ('Shurah' Committee, Business Committee, Credit Committee and others as the need arises).

Aim and Objectives

The aim of the society is to set up a financial institution with the ability to pool resources together for the benefit of members on an interest-free basis, which shall be guided solely by Islamic principles. Objectives of the society are: To
  • Seek the pleasure of Allah by providing members with the opportunity to gradually disengage from usury ('Riba') in its entire ramification.
  • Serve as a means of encouraging members to save part of their earnings.
  • Serve as a means of pooling resources of members together for the purpose of engaging in legitimate trade.
  • Provide a reserve fund for lending to members on an interest-free basis.
  • Provide opportunity for purchasing vital goods/materials and repayment in monthly installments, with an appropriate profit margin agreed upon by the General/ Annual General Meeting.
  • Engage in property development schemes for the benefit of members.
  • Encourage members on whom the Zakat is due, to develop the habit of paying the Zakat.
  • Organise target savings for Hajj (Annual pilgrimage) and other purposes.
  • Have a special fund dedicated to assist needy members and non-members
  • Undertake any other projects that may be approved by the EXCO.

Membership

  • Membership of the society shall be open to staff members of Federal University of Technology, Minna, who are not on temporary appointment, provided such individuals commit themselves to save a total sum of N60, 000.00 within a period not exceeding 12 months.
  • Membership shall be granted to staff associations, corporate or incorporate operating within the University
  • Application for membership shall be made through the Secretary on the prescribed form(s), subject to the payment of an approved application fee.
  • Application for membership shall be subject to screening and approval by the EXCO.
Successful applicants shall pay an annual due as may be determined from time to time at the Annual General Meeting.

The society currently give the following types of loan/sales and corresponding duration of repayment are:

Liability & Source of Funds

Liability
  • All members shall be jointly liable for the losses and debts of the society, provided such losses or debts are not incurred through the negligence of any member.
  • When losses are incurred on behalf of the society through the established negligence of any member(s), such member(s) shall be liable.
Source of Funds
The funds of the Society shall be derived from:
  • Application fees and annual dues, which are non-refundable.
  • Savings and deposits from members.
  • Share capital.
  • Surpluses arising from trading.
  • Miscellaneous sources as may be approved by the Annual General meeting.
